OrtoGal, the first Galician online spell checker, is developed by the
Computationalof Linguistics Group at the University of Vigo and is available from 2006. OrtoGal is based on the 60,000 stems from the
VOLG (Vocabulario ortográfico da lingua galega, ILG/RAG, 1989) which, once inflected (and combined with pronouns, in the case of verbs), allow to verify 25 million words. That lexical base is complemented with a repertoire of toponyms, anthroponyms and abbreviations in order to reduce false alarms during spell checking. The strategy for spell correction is not based solely on the similarity of the wrong form with other correct Galician words, but offers specific solutions to the most common errors produced by ignorance of the norm in written language, such as Spanish interferences, hypercorrections or the improper use of foreign terms.
