Mulleres na Lexicografía / Women in Lexicography
Éva Buchi (also: Eva Büchi)
Frequently: English, French ; occasionally: German, Italian, Russian, Spanish.
*1964 (Lucerne - or: Luzern [Swiss Standard German], Switzerland)
Éva Buchi obtained her high school diploma in 1983 at the Gymnasium Kirchenfeld in Bern, the de-facto capital of Switzerland. Her mother tongue is a local dialect of Alemannic German. Having learned Latin, ancient, and modern Greek, French, Russian and Biblical Hebrew in school, she studied French and Russian at the University of Bern in view of becoming a teacher. Focusing mostly on Romance and Slavic languages, she learned several other languages, namely Romanian, Italian, Romansh, Catalan, Spanish, Slavonic and Czech. Graduating in 1989, she had been participating in the dictionary project Französisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch (FEW) under the direction of Jean-Pierre Chambon in Basel since 1987. In 1994, she obtained the Doctoral Prize (Doktoratspreis) of the University of Bern for her doctorate entitled "Les Structures du Französisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch. Recherches métalexicographiques et métalexicologiques". In 1995, Éva Buchi became a research fellow at the National Scientific Research Centre (CNRS) and continued her editing work of the FEW at the Institut National de la Langue Française (INaLF) in Nancy, France. Five years after the merger of the INaLF with two research institutes of the University of Nancy in 2001, she successively became deputy director (2006 - 2012) and director (2013 - 2017) of the ATILF (Analyse et Traitement Informatique de la Langue Français – Computer Processing and Analysis of the French Language). Important contributions to lexicological and etymological research consist in the indexation of the FEW (1998 - 2001), the direction and writing of articles in Romance anthroponymy for the Dictionnaire historique de l'anthroponymie romane (PatRom, http://patrom.fltr.ucl.ac.be/), and theoretical studies on the transition between linguistic categories (grammaticalization/ pragmaticalization processes, and other). Since 2008, Éva Buchi has co-directed the Roman Etymological Dictionary (Dictionnaire Étymologique Roman, DÉRom) together with Wolfgang Schweickard. On its webpage hosted by the ATILF, DÉRom presents itself as "the vector of a paradigm shift" in Romance etymology, where the traditional method, based essentially on data from written Latin, is being replaced by the comparative method (http://www.atilf.fr/DERom). She has also participated in several other projects, such as TLF-Étym (http://www.atilf.fr/tlf-etym), an internal project of the CNRS (ATILF), dedicated to partial updates and revisions of the Trésor de la Langue Française informatisé (TLFi) hosted by the ATILF. Besides her research, Éva Buchi has taught as a lecturer and part-time lecturer at the universities of Bern (1989-1999), Marc Bloch, Strasbourg (1999-2003) and Nancy 2/ Lorraine (2006- ), predominantly in the fields of general, French, and Romance linguistics. Since 2010, she has also lectured within the Erasmus Mundus programme European Master in Lexicography (EMLex) in lexicology and lexicography.
