Ann Hui-Huan Chang (In Chinese: 張惠環, Pinyin: Zhāng Huìhuán)

Before delving into the world of linguistics, Dr. Chang had a major in Information Science. Driven by her interests in the English language, she transferred her studies to Providence University, Taiwan, where she was awarded a B.A. in English Language and Literature and subsequently a M.A. in Linguistics. It was at Providence University where she was employed as a research assistant due to her previous training in data processing. Tasked by National Science and Technology Council (NSIC), Dr. Chang first encountered Yami/Tao language, which differs substantially from both English and Chinese. She employed her knowledge in digital tools for corpus data processing, the creation of a lexical database, as well as the compilation of several paperback dictionaries for the endangered Tao/Yami language. In 2018, Chang finished her PhD dissertation titled ‘Case Studies on Yami Sociolinguistic Variation’ at National Chung-Cheng University (NCCU), Taiwan. Dr. Chang has been collaborating with Dr Victoria Rau and Maa-Neu Dong, a native speaker of Yami/Tao and activist for language revitalization. Joining their respective strengths, they have contributed to the development of online learning materials and to language documentation with the help of digital technology. It is worth mentioning the learning materials now also cover the teaching of Indonesian, another Austronesian language same as Yami/Tao. Furthermore, their efforts have also brought about the publication of several Yami/Tao language dictionaries. One of the major challenges when compiling the dictionary, as Dr Chang recalled, is for instance the complex ontological system of Yami/Tao language – especially with regard to ichthyological and botanical terms – in view of Tao people’s marine culture and profound knowledge in the areas. These terms thus often require numerous enquiries to be ascertained of their exact referents. Currently, Dr. Chang is serving as an adjunct assistant professor teaching freshman English, computer-assisted language learning, and linguistics at National Chin-Yi University of Technology and Providence University (both in Taiwan). In addition, she continues to work in Yami Archiving Team led by Dr. Victoria Rau. Chang is working on a multimedia-enhanced frequency dictionary of spoken corpus of the Tao/Yami language differentiated by semantic domains. Further ongoing projects include a digital archive and development of didactic materials.
