Mulleres na Lexicografía / Women in Lexicography
María Teresa Sanmarco Bande
Spanish, Galician, Italian
1970 (Galicia, Spain)
María Teresa Sanmarco holds a PhD in Linguistics and is a lecturer in the Department of Classical, French and Italian Philology at the University of Santiago de Compostela since 2003. She is a professor in the Degree in Modern Languages and Literatures ( major: Italian) and in the Master Mundus in Lexicography (EMLex). She is a researcher at the Galician Language Institute (ILG) and is a member of several groups (Italian Philology, LICEI) and research networks (RELEX). She is co-author of several dictionaries, author of a contrastive grammar of Italian and is particularly interested in gender discourse and the relationship between lexicography and culture. Prof. Sanmarco received her training as a lexicographer at the Galician Royal Academy's Lexicography Seminar, where she worked on the compilation of the Italian-Galician/Galician-Italian dictionary. Her main lines of research - lexicography, grammar and contrastive linguistics (Italian, Galician, Spanish) - led her to join the inter-university research group LICEI, dedicated, among others, to the study of the history of Italian-Spanish lexicography. Outstanding among her studies and lexicographical projects are the bilingual Galician-Italian vocabularies specialised in cultural tourism, such as architecture, painting, sculpture, gastronomy and hospitality business. She has also dedicated herself to the study of authors such as Alfonso de Ulloa, Pasquale Fornari and Emilio Martínez Amado. Since 2013, she has been a member of PORTLEX, MultiGenera and MultiComb, three multilingual lexicography projects that include the application of natural language processing and generation techniques in their development. Together with her studies on lexicography and its didactics, Maite Sanmarco actively participates in and organizes different activities that contribute to the dissemination and training of lexicography. One example is the different collaborative lexicography events, such as the consecutive editions of the EMLEX WIKTIONARY HACKFEST or the open initiatives that promote the incorporation of women's profiles in Wikipedia.

Personal webpage: http://webspersoais.usc.es/persoais/mt.sanmarco/ Interesting facts: Sanmarco is involved, through her field of work, in social causes. An example is the development of the project "Artemisa: personal growth and empowerment of women in social difficulty", promoted by the Red Cross. In the same vein, the linguist works for the visibility of women in the field of science. A small example of her activity in this field is the initiative Más mujeres en Wikipedia (http://hdl.handle.net/10347/15435), a project carried out in collaboration with Prof. Calvo Iglesias, which aims to increase and improve the information on women scientists in Wikipedia and Wikipedia.
