Kristina Štrkalj Despot, PhD, is a Croatian lexicographer and linguist whose main lines of research include cognitive linguistics, theory of conceptual metaphor, neural theory of language, semantics, lexicography, syntax, history of Croatian language and literature. Štrkalj Despot holds the position of a Vice Director at the Institute for the Croatian Language and Linguistics, where she has been employed since the year 2003. Her academic qualifications include a graduation year of 2002, and the attainment of her doctorate in 2007 from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. As a distinguished Fulbright postdoctoral fellow, she spent a period from 2011 to 2012 at the University of Berkeley, USA.

She was one of the authors of the monograph Croatian Medieval Poetry, which the first complete chrestomathy and monograph of Croatian medieval texts written in verse during the period of 14th-6th centuries, in Old Latin, Croatian Glagolitic and Croatian Cyrillic scripts. She has published two novels: Težina (Hardness), Zagreb: Profil, 2003, and Odjel Babinjače (Maternity Department), Zagreb: Profil 2008, and several books for children. She received following awards: 2014 Croatian National Research and Education Award “Ivan Filipović” 2010 National Academic Award of the Republic of Croatia 2010 Croatian Writers Society Award “Judita”
